Mix them together and you have a chemical reaction that removes the detergent and leaves a residue that will be left in the clothing. You RINSE clothing in diluted vinegar to remove particularly pungent odors (methyl mercaptan, skunk oil, comes to mind.) Putting acid in the washer along with detergent just makes the detergent less effective.
